As is fast becoming the tradition in our household, Christmas Eve is cocktail night. My husband bakes a ham, I bake a Camembert and throw together a fig chutney. We curl up on the sofa, watching old movies and eating and drinking to our heart’s content.
His cocktail of choice is the old fashioned.
Ingredients
1 white sugar cube
2 dashes of orange bitter
50ml bourbon
orange zest to garnish
Preparation
Place the sugar cube in an old fashioned glass and soak with the bitters. Muddle the mixture with a barspoon and add a dash of bourbon and a couple of ice cubes. Keep muddling until a full 50ml bourboun has been added to the glass and the sugar has dissolved. Run orange zest around the rim of the glass and then drop into the drink and serve.
Mine, however, is the Sidecar
Ingredients
50ml brandy
20 ml fresh lemon juice
20 ml Cointreau
Sugar for the glass
Preparation
Shake all the ingredients together over ice and strain into a frosted Martini glass rimmed with sugar.
Merry Christmas!
